Founder Angelica Iga, a former veterinary assistant, launched Happy Tails & Trails in 2001 with a single mission: to elevate the quality of dog care in Chicago by creating an environment where dogs thrive physically and emotionally. Today, her passionate team of trained handlers continues that mission with structure, warmth, and wagging tails.

Young pups who haven’t completed vaccinations enjoy socializing safely in our Infant Puppy Play sessions. It’s also where we introduce basic manners and get them started with:

The Challenge
Rosa, a Mini Bernedoodle, came to us with a big mission ahead—her owner had waited over 10 years to get a dog and dreamed of having a well-mannered, confident therapy dog. As a first-time and understandably nervous dog owner, she wanted to ensure Rosa’s experience was entirely positive, nurturing, and aligned with therapy certification standards.
The Training
Rosa embarked on a 9-month advanced training program, which involved both her and her dedicated owner. Our goal was to shape Rosa into a calm, obedient, and socially confident therapy dog. Training areas included:
- Obedience commands: focus, stay, and responsiveness to both hand signals and verbal cues
- Confidence-building: approaching strangers calmly, resisting the urge to jump, and remaining steady near children, loud noises, and large or unfamiliar objects
- Special exposure: working around wheelchairs, children, and urban distractions
- Therapy dog requirements: holding positions for extended periods, staying calm under pressure, and showing exceptional temperament
This was no ordinary obedience class—Rosa had to become nearly flawless in behavior, while remaining joyful and social.
The Results
Rosa passed her therapy dog exam on her first attempt—an honor achieved by only 10% of candidates. She graduated as one of our star pupils: calm, obedient, even-tempered, and a true joy to be around. Her journey was not only transformative for her, but also for her owner, who gained confidence and a lifelong companion ready to serve others.

Not only does Angie work miracles with training, keeps detailed notes on her behavior and provides training tips for me, but I feel like they love my dog like their own. Our Dog Care Clients
This doggie daycare is amazing! I’ve been taking my dog here for the last 2 and a half years since he was 6 months old. He gets so excited every time I tell him he’s going to daycare and he is exhausted for the next day after picking him up. The workers there all know him and care about him as well which makes me feel so confident and comfortable leaving him there. We also use them for grooming and boarding over the weekend which have all been great as well. If anything has come up while we are away, they are quick to communicate with us and provide updates. Can’t recommend this doggie daycare enough!!
