Relationship-Based Dog Training for Real Chicago, IL Life

Life in the city is busy, loud, and full of distractions. Your dog has to handle crowded sidewalks, elevators, joggers in Grant Park, other dogs at Montrose Dog Beach, and people everywhere. That’s a lot to ask without the right guidance.

At Happy Tails & Trails, we specialize in dog training Chicago, IL dog parents can trust—training that’s built around your dog’s emotional well-being, your lifestyle, and our city’s unique environment.

Founded in 2001 by Angelica “Angie” Iga, a former veterinary assistant, our family-owned, BBB A+ rated business has spent 24 years helping Chicago dogs and their people live easier, calmer lives together. Angie personally leads many of our programs with over 20 years of professional experience and a simple philosophy:

We don’t just train commands—we build relationships.

Our mission is to create an environment where dogs thrive physically and emotionally, using kind, effective, dog-approved methods only.

Where We Train: Real Skills for Real Chicago, IL Environments

Our programs run out of both of our centrally located facilities:

  • 1 W. Superior St. – Ideal for River North, Streeterville, Lakeshore East
  • 1613 W. Walnut St. – Convenient to West Loop, Fulton Market, South Loop, Lincoln Park

We use indoor, climate-controlled training spaces (because Chicago, IL winters and humid summers are no joke) and then expand training into real-world locations, such as:

  • Montrose Dog Beach
  • Grant Park and Wicker Park
  • Busy sidewalks in River North and West Loop

Dogs learn city-specific skills like:

  • Navigating curbs, corners, and crosswalks
  • Staying focused around bikes, skateboards, strollers, and joggers
  • Walking calmly through crowded areas rather than reacting to everything

Every program is designed with Chicago’s fast-paced environment in mind.

Private Dog Obedience Training During Daycare

Our most popular option is training during daycare—perfect for busy professionals who want results without adding more appointments to their schedule. While your dog is at daycare, we build in daily 45-minute private training sessions with a custom plan.

Basic Obedience Training (10 Weekdays – $1,700)

Ideal for dogs who need solid everyday manners:

  • Watch and focus around distractions
  • Sit and down on cue without constant food lures
  • Reliable recall foundations (coming when called)
  • Loose leash walking so walks are calm, not chaotic
  • Stay or stand for grooming and vet visits
  • City leash work for sidewalks, corners, and street safety

For dogs who know the basics but struggle in real-world environments:

  • Stay with distance and duration, even with distractions
  • Reliable recall in busy areas like parks and lakefront paths
  • Distraction training for bikes, skateboards, runners, and loud noises
  • Polite greetings—no more jumping on visitors or lunging at other dogs
  • Advanced walking and heel in crowded spaces

Every dog receives a custom training plan based on their temperament, history, and your goals. You’ll get report cards, photos, videos, and weekly updates so you know exactly what we’re working on and how to continue it at home.

Real Chicago, IL Dog Training Success Stories

We could talk about our methods all day—but our favorite proof comes from the dogs and families we’ve worked with.

Rosa the Therapy Dog – Mini Bernedoodle

Rosa’s owner, Francie, was a first-time dog parent who waited over 10 years to get a puppy and was terrified of “messing it up.” Together, we completed a 9-month advanced training program focusing on:

  • Obedience with hand signals and verbal cues
  • Confidence-building in busy environments
  • Exposure to wheelchairs, children, and unfamiliar settings

Rosa passed her therapy dog exam on the first attempt—something only about 10% of candidates achieve. Francie says:

“I can’t say enough good things about Angie and the team at Happy Tails & Trails… Not only does Angie work miracles with training and keeps detailed notes, but I feel like they love my dog like their own.”

Max (Milo) – The Reactive Aussie

Before training, Max barked excessively at other dogs, pulled hard on leash, and made walks tense and stressful. After working through our CGC group class and real-world practice in places like Wicker Park and Grant Park:

“Now, Milo enjoys peaceful walks and is a regular at Grant Park. His owner reports fewer outbursts and compliments from neighbors on his improved manners.”

Skye – The Shy Mini Australian Shepherd

Skye started out sweet but anxious, with separation worries and trouble focusing. After Puppy Manners and Basic Obedience with us:

  • She learned to offer automatic sits during walks
  • She could heel and walk politely on leash
  • She responded reliably to wait, stay, and place commands

Her owner shared:

“Angie is patient, knowledgeable, and truly invested in Skye’s progress. The daily report cards and videos made it easy to continue the training at home… she became more confident, focused, and well-adjusted.”
